The2002 United States Open Championshipwas the 102ndU.S. Open,held June 13–16 at theBlack CourseofBethpage State ParkinFarmingdale, New York,east ofNew York CityonLong Island.Tiger Woodswas the champion at 277 (−3), three shots ahead of runner-upPhil Mickelson.It was Woods' second U.S. Open victory and eighthmajor championshipwin of his career. Woods was the only golfer in the field to finish under par.

This U.S. Open was billed as "The People's Open", as it was the first to be held on a true public golf course.

For the first time in thirty years, the winner of theMastersalso won the U.S. Open, for the first half of thegrand slam.It was last accomplished byJack Nicklausin1972,and also byArnold Palmer(1960),Ben Hogan(1951,1953), andCraig Wood(1941).

Nick FaldoandHale Irwinwere given special exemptions from theUSGAto play in the event.[3][4]
