The2021 Durand Cupwas the 130th edition ofDurand Cup,the oldest football tournament in Asia. Like itsprevious edition,the tournament was hosted inWest Bengal.[1]The tournament is jointly hosted by theEastern Commandof theIndian Armed Forcesand theGovernment of West Bengal.[2]
The Durand Cup was cancelled in 2020 due to worldwideCOVID-19 pandemicand was reorganised in 2021 after a year gap.[3]Gokulam Keralawere the defending champions, having defeatedMohun Baganin the2019 final.[4][5]
Mohammedanmade their first Durand Cup final appearance since2013against debutants FC Goa.[6]The match went into theextra timewith no goal from either side. Goan captainEdu Bedia's 105th minute solitary goal sealed Goa's victory against Mohammedan.[7]Goabecame the fourth Goan team to win the Durand Cup afterSalgaocar,DempoandChurchill Brothers.

[edit]A total of 16 teams participated in the competition;5clubs fromIndian Super League,3clubs fromI-League,2clubs fromI-League 2nd Divisionand6teams representing theIndian Armed Forces.
Mohun BaganandEast Bengalwere invited to be part of the tournament but most of the first team players of Mohun Bagan were on international break and also had theirAFC Cup knockoutscoinciding with the Durand Cup fixtures, thus they backed out from the tournament, while East Bengal refused participation because of investor issues. Since this year India celebratesgolden jubileeof itsvictory over Pakistan for the liberation of Bangladeshin 1971, DFTS invitedMohammedan SCandSk. Jamal Dhanmondi ClubfromBangladeshto participate in the 130th edition of the tournament. But due to theCOVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh,the clubs were unable to confirm their participation.[13]

[edit]- ^Attendance:Due to the presumed emergence ofthird wave of COVID-19 outbreak,only 50% of attendance at most would be allowed in the stadiums byGovernment of West Bengal.But, the Durand Football Tournament Society decided to first allow negligible or no attendance, and then gradually towards the end of the tournament, allow up to 50% of attendance in compliance with government norms if everything went well.[18]
