The31st parallel northis acircle of latitudethat is 31degreesnorthof theEarth'sequatorial plane.It crossesAfrica,Asia,thePacific Ocean,North America,and theAtlantic Ocean.At this latitude thesunis visible for 14 hours, 10 minutes during thesummer solsticeand 10 hours, 8 minutes during thewinter solstice.[1]

In theUnited States,it defines part of the border between the states ofMississippiandLouisiana,and most of the border betweenAlabamaandFlorida.Andrew Ellicottsurveyed this parallel in 1797, which inPinckney's Treatytwo years before had been defined as the border between the United States and the Spanish territory ofWest Florida.
