The37th Goya Awardsceremony, presented by theAcademy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain,took place at theFIBES Conference and Exhibition CentreinSeville,Andalusiaon 11 February 2023.

Background[edit]

On 31 May 2022,Sevillewas revealed as the host city, with the awards thereby set to return to the Andalusian capital after the33rd edition.[2]On 29 June 2022, the specific date of 11 February was disclosed by the academy presidentFernando Méndez-Leiteand the Mayor of SevilleAntonio Muñoz,along with the announcement of the venue (theFIBES Conference and Exhibition Centre) and the reported increase from 4 to 5 nominations per category.[3][4]In November 2022Clara LagoandAntonio de la Torrewere announced as the co-hosts of the gala, to be directed by Tinet Rubira and Ángel Custodio, with Fernando Pérez helming the screenwriting team.[5]

The nominations were announced on 1 December 2022 by actressesBlanca PortilloandNora Navas,The Beastsled the nominations with seventeen, followed byPrison 77with sixteen andAlcarràsandLullaby,both with eleven.[6]DirectorCarlos Saura,recipient of theHonorary Goya Award,died on 10 February 2023, a day before the awards. He was honored posthumously during the ceremony.[7]

Rodrigo Sorogoyen's thrillerThe Beastsreceived the most awards during the ceremony with nine wins, includingBest Film.[8]ThebronzeGoya statuettes were brownish instead of featuring their traditional greenish finishing as a consequence of the use of recycled bronze.[9]

The ceremony, broadcast onLa 1,was viewed by 2.684.000 million people (23,4%), being the most watched program at the primetime slot of the day.[1]
