60S ribosomal protein L5is aproteinthat in humans is encoded by theRPL5gene.[5][6]

Function

[edit]

Ribosomes, theorganellesthat catalyzeprotein synthesis, consist of a small40Ssubunit and a large60Ssubunit. Together these subunits are composed of 4RNAspecies and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins. This gene encodes aribosomal proteinthat is a component of the 60S subunit. The protein belongs to the L18P family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in thecytoplasm. The protein binds5S rRNAto form a stable complex called the 5Sribonucleoprotein particle(RNP), which is necessary for the transport of nonribosome-associated cytoplasmic 5S rRNA to thenucleolusfor assembly into ribosomes. The protein interacts specifically with the beta subunit ofcasein kinase 2.

Clinical significance

[edit]

Variable expression of this gene incolorectal cancerscompared to adjacent normal tissues has been observed, although no correlation between the level of expression and the severity of the disease has been found. This gene is co-transcribed with thesmall nucleolar RNAgeneU21,which is located in its fifthintron. As is typical for genes encoding ribosomal proteins, there are multipleprocessed pseudogenesof this gene dispersed through the genome.[7]
