August 17–Battle of the Gates of Trajan:EmperorBasil IIleads aByzantineexpeditionary force (30,000 men) against the Bulgarians to capture the fortress city ofSredets.After asiegeof 20 days, Basil is forced to retreat from theSofia Valleytowards the town ofIhtiman(through a passage known as theGate of Trajan). The Bulgarians under TsarSamuelambush and defeat the Byzantine forces. Only the eliteVarangian Guardescapes with heavy casualties and leads Basil to safety through secondary routes.^[1]
