[edit]The A696 begins at a junction with theA68 road(toEdinburghandCorbridge). It heads in a south-easterly direction through the village of Otterburn, and then pastKirkwhelpington.It meets theB6342 road(toRothbury) and then goes through the village ofBelsayand the small town ofPonteland.The A696 becomesdual carriagewaystandard just before passingNewcastle Airport,with the junctions after the airport all beinggrade separated.The A696 terminates at aroundaboutwith theA1 road(toGateshead) and theA167 road(into Newcastle city centre).
