AeliaeorÆliæwas aRoman-eracityin theprovinceofByzacena.[1]

The town must have been of some importance as it was made abishopricearly after theCouncil of Nicaeaand it was aCatholicdiocese throughoutantiquity.

Its exact location is tentatively given as ruins nearHenchir-Mraba[2][3]southeast ofOuled Chamekh,between lakeSebkhet CheritaandSebkhet de Sidi El Haniin the central part of what is todayMahdia Governorate,Tunisia.[4]

Aeliae was also theseatof an ancient Christianbishopric.There are threebishopsdocumented as residing in Aeliae during antiquity.[5][6]

Since 1933 Aeliae has been atitular bishopric.Since 2019 the title has been held by Ricardo Augusto Rodríguez Álvarez, Auxiliary Bishop of Lima, Peru.[7]
