Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Nahawandi(Persian:احمد نهاوندى), also calledal-Nahawandi,was an 8th/9th centuryPersianastronomer.His name indicates that he was fromNahavand,now in modern Iran.
Life[edit]
Al-Nahawandi lived and worked at theAcademy of Gundishapur,inKhuzestan,Iran, at the time ofYahya ibn Khalid ibn Barmak,the provincial governor and all-powerful long-timevizierto CaliphHarun al-Rashid.Al-Nahawandi is reported to have been making astronomical observations at the academy in around 800.[1]He and the astronomer andmathematicianMashallah ibn Athariwere among the earliestIslamic era astronomerswho flourished during the reign ofal-Mansur,the secondAbbasidcaliph.[citation needed]
