Ahtem Chiygoz(Crimean Tatar:Ahtem Zeytulla oğlu Çiygoz,Ukrainian:Ахтем Зейтуллайович Чийгоз,born 14 December 1964,Bulungur,Uzbek SSR) is aUkrainianCrimean Tatarpolitician. He is the Deputy Chairman of theMejlis of the Crimean Tatar People,[1]aPeople's Deputy of Ukrainein the currentconvocation,[2]Chairman of theBakhchysarayregional Mejlis, and delegate to theQurultay of the Crimean Tatar People.
Biography[edit]
He is a former political prisoner of the Kremlin; followingRussia's attempted annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula[3]he was arrested on January 29, 2015, and charged with organization of a rally in support of theterritorial integrity of Ukrainethat took place inSimferopolon February 26, 2014.[4]He was freed on October 25, 2017.[5]
In the2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election,Chiygoz was elected to the Ukrainian parliament as a deputy for the partyEuropean Solidarity.[6]
Head of the Subcommittee on Ethnic Policy, Rights of Indigenous Peoples and National Minorities of Ukraine of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, De-occupation and Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories in Donetsk and Luhansk Regions and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the City of Sevastopol, National Minorities and International Relations[20]. Currently, in 2024, he is living in Turkey with his family.[7]
