Al Iaquinta(born April 30, 1987) is an American Real Estate Agent and former professionalmixed martial artistwho competed in thelightweightdivision of theUltimate Fighting Championship,having once challenged for the Lightweight championship belt. A professional MMA competitor since 2009, Iaquinta has been signed with the UFC since 2012.
Mixed martial arts career

[edit]Iaquinta, who is of Italian descent, wrestled atWantagh High School[5]and went on to earn his associate degree fromNassau Community College,where he also wrestled.[6]Before turning pro, Iaquinta had a perfect amateur record of 14–0. Iaquinta began his pro MMA career fighting for the Ring of Combat promotion. There, he earned a record of 5–1–1.[7]
The Ultimate Fighter
[edit]Iaquinta was one of 32 lightweight fighters announced by the UFC to participate in first live season ofThe Ultimate Fighterreality show.[8]Iaquinta advanced into the TUF house by defeatingJon Tuckby unanimous decision after one round.[9]Afterwards, he was chosen as first pick for Team Faber.
After his team lost the first two matches, Iaquinta earned the first win for Team Faber by defeatingMyles Juryvia split decision after three rounds.[10]
In the quarter-finals, Iaquinta fought Team Faber teammate,Andy Ogle.Iaquinta won via TKO in the closing moments of round one.[11]The win advanced Iaquinta into the semi-finals where he faced Team Cruz'sVinc Pichel.Iaquinta defeated Pichel via unanimous decision after two rounds and moved on to the finals against teammateMichael Chiesa.[12]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
[edit]Iaquinta officially made his UFC debut atThe Ultimate Fighter 15 Finaleon June 1, 2012, againstMichael Chiesato determine the winner ofThe Ultimate Fighter: Live.Iaquinta lost to Chiesa by submission due to a rear naked choke early in the first round.[13]
Iaquinta was expected to faceJoe Proctoron April 27, 2013, atUFC 159.[14]However, the bout was scrapped as both fighters sustained training injuries leading up to the fight.[15]
Iaquinta facedRyan Coutureon August 31, 2013, atUFC 164,replacing an injuredQuinn Mulhern.[16]He won the bout via unanimous decision, after dominating the fight on the feet and negating all of Couture's takedown attempts.
Iaquinta was expected to faceAnthony Njokuanion October 26, 2013, atUFC Fight Night 30,replacing an injuredPaul Taylor.[17]Then on September 24, Njokuani pulled out of the event with an injury.[18]Iaquinta instead facedPiotr Hallmann.[19]He won the fight by unanimous decision (29–28, 30–27, and 30–27).

Iaquinta was expected to faceBobby Greenon July 15, 2015, atUFC Fight Night 71.[32]However, Green pulled out of the fight in mid-June, citing an undisclosed injury, and he was replaced byGilbert Melendez.[33]Subsequently, Melendez was removed from the card on July 6, after it was revealed that he tested positive forperformance-enhancing drugsafter his previous fight atUFC 188.[34]In turn, Iaquinta was removed from the card as well.[35]
Iaquinta was expected to faceThiago Alveson November 12, 2016, atUFC 205.[36]However, Iaquinta announced on September 19 that he would not be taking the fight due to a contract dispute with the promotion.[37]
After two years away from the sport, Iaquinta returned to faceDiego Sanchezon April 22, 2017, atUFC Fight Night 108.[38]He won the fight via knockout in the first round.[39]
Iaquinta was expected to facePaul Felderon December 2, 2017, atUFC 218.[40]However, Iaquinta pulled out of the fight on October 31 due to being unsatisfied with his current contract, and he was replaced byCharles Oliveira.[41]
UFC Lightweight Championship fight
[edit]The bout with Felder was rescheduled and was expected to take place on April 7, 2018, atUFC 223.[42]However, because of an injury to interimUFC Lightweight ChampionTony Fergusonand the state athletic commission's decision to pull replacementUFC Featherweight ChampionMax Hollowayover concerns over his weight cut, Iaquinta was scheduled as a replacement againstKhabib Nurmagomedovin the five round main event.[43]Although the fight was scheduled for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship, only Nurmagomedov was eligible to win the championship due to Iaquinta weighing in at 155.2 lbs which is two tenths of a pound over the championship weight limit of 155. Iaquinta had already weighed in for his fight againstPaul Felderprior to officially being announced as the new replacement. Non-championship bouts allow fighters to weigh in one pound over the limit.[44]Ultimately, Iaquinta lost the fight via unanimous decision.[45]
Post UFC Lightweight Championship fight
[edit]Iaquinta was scheduled to faceJustin Gaethjeon August 25, 2018, atUFC Fight Night 135.[46]However, on June 28, 2018, Iaquinta withdrew from the bout, and he was replaced byJames Vick.[47]
Iaquinta facedKevin Leein a rematch on December 15, 2018, atUFC on Fox 31.[48]He won the fight by unanimous decision.[49]This win earned him thePerformance of the Nightaward.[50]
Iaquinta facedDonald Cerroneon May 4, 2019, atUFC Fight Night 151.[51]He lost the fight via unanimous decision.[52]This fight earned him theFight of the Nightbonus award.[53]
