Preparation
[edit]Americium can be obtained from the reaction of metallic americium with nitrogen orammoniaat 750–800°C:[2]
- 2Am + N2→ 2AmN
- 2Am + 2NH3→ 2AmN + 3H2[3]
It can also be obtained from the reaction ofamericium trihydride(AmH3) with nitrogen at 750 °C:[4]
- AmH3+ N2→ AmN + NH3
Chemical properties
[edit]Americium nitride reacts withcadmium chlorideto formamericium trichloride:[5]
- 2 AmN + 3 CdCl2→ 2 AmCl3+ Cd3N2
