Andrew Tremlett(born 9 March 1964) is a BritishChurch of Englandpriest. Since 2022, he has served asDean of St Paul's,and is therefore the head of the Chapter ofSt Paul's Cathedraland the most senior priest in theDiocese of London.Previously, he was acanon residentiaryofBristol Cathedral(2008–2010), a canon residentiary ofWestminster Abbey(2010–2016) andDean of Durham(2016–2022).

Early life and education[edit]

Tremlett was born on 9 March 1964.[1]His father isTony Tremlett,who was aChurch of Englandpriest and formerArchdeacon.[1]From 1975 to 1982, he was educated atPlymouth College,aprivate schoolinPlymouth,Devon.[2]He thenmatriculatedintoPembroke College, Cambridgeto studyclassics.[2]He graduated from theUniversity of Cambridgewith a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1986; as per tradition, his BA was promoted to aCambridge Master of Arts(MA Cantab) degree in 1990.[3]

In 1986, Tremlett began training for ordination atWycliffe Hall, Oxford,anAnglicantheological collegein theevangelicaltradition.During this time, he also studied theology atThe Queen's College, Oxford,and graduated from theUniversity of Oxfordwith a BA degree in 1988; as per tradition, his BA was promoted to an MA (Oxon) in 1995.[3]He was awarded the Pusey and Ellerton Senior Prize which is awarded to "candidates whose performance in Biblical Hebrew the examiners judge to be of sufficient merit".[2][4]

During his career as an ordained minister, Tremlett has continued to study. In 1996, he graduated from theUniversity of Exeterwith aMaster of Philosophy(MPhil) degree.[3]He studiedpatristics,and his thesis was titled "Metaphors of Salvation in the Soteriology ofOrigen of Alexandria".[2]In 2003, he completed aPostgraduate Certificate in Church School Education(PGCE) at theUniversity of Liverpool.[3]

Ordained ministry[edit]

Tremlett wasordainedin theChurch of Englandas adeaconin 1989 and as apriestin 1990.[3]From 1989 to 1992, he served hiscuracyin the Parish of St Matthias, St Mark and Holy Trinity,Torquay,Diocese of Exeter.[5]From 1992 to 1995, he was based in theDiocese of Europe.[3]He served as chaplain tothe Mission to Seafarersand as assistant Chaplain ofSt Mary's Anglican and Episcopal ChurchinRotterdam,Netherlands,from 1992 to 1994. He was then chaplain (i.e.priest-in-charge) of St Mary's from 1994 to 1995.[5]

In 1995, Tremlett returned to England. From 1995 to 1998, he wasteam vicarof the Parish of Holy Trinity with St Columba,Fareham,in theDiocese of Portsmouth.[3]From 1998 to 2003, he served asbishop's chaplaintoKenneth Stevenson,theBishop of Portsmouth.During this time he also worked with theDoctrine Commission of the Church of Englandas a parliamentary research assistant and secretary.[5]He then moved to theDiocese of Chichester,where he wasvicarofSt Mary's Church, Goring-by-Sea,Worthing,from 2003 to 2008.[3]

In 2008, Tremlett moved to theDiocese of Bristol.He had been appointed acanon residentiaryofBristol Cathedraland the Keeper of the Fabric; as such, he was responsible for the cathedral's development plan.[5]From June 2009 to May 2010, he served as the actingDean of Bristolduring theinterregnum.[5][6]

In July 2010, it was announced that Tremlett was to be made aCanon of WestminsterandRectorofSt Margaret's Church, Westminster.[7]There was controversy surrounding the appointment. The rector of St Margaret's had also been theChaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commonsfor the previous 40 years.[8]However,John Bercowblocked the appointment of Tremlett having described him as "another white middle aged man", and instead appointedRose Hudson-Wilkinas chaplain.[9]In October 2010, he wasinstalledas a canon atWestminster Abbey.[6]In June 2014, he was additionally appointed theArchdeacon of Westminsterand the sub-dean of Westminster Abbey.[5]

Dean[edit]

On 17 December 2015, Tremlett was announced as the nextDean of Durham.[10][5]Though the previousdean,Michael Sadgrove,retired on 31 December 2015,[11]Tremlett was to be installed as dean in the summer of 2016.[12][13]On 17 July 2016, he was installed as dean in a service atDurham Cathedral.[14][15]He has also beenrectorofSt Chad's College, Durham,from 2017.[16]

On 30 March 2022, it was announced that Tremlett is to become the nextDean of St Paul'sfollowing the retirement ofDavid Ison,which was scheduled for September 2022.[17]Tremlett was formally appointed on 21 September 2022,[18]and installed on 25 September 2022.[19]

Personal life[edit]

Tremlett married Ali, a teacher, in 1988 and has three children; they separated in 2016[16]and divorced in 2021.[20]He marriedMaggi Dawnin April 2022.[21]

Tremlett had a cat called Badger which became well known among the students ofDurham Universityand residents living in the city. Badger had over 3,000 followers on Twitter. Announcing the news of Badger's death, Tremlett said: "Very sadly, after a short illness, he has found his place in the sun."[22]
