Ann CleevesOBE(born 24 October 1954) is aBritishmysterycrimewriter. She wrote theVera Stanhope,Jimmy Perez,andMatthew Vennseries, all three of which have been adapted intoTV shows.In 2006 she won theDuncan Lawrie Daggerfor her novelRaven Black,[1]the first novel in theJimmy Perezseries.

Early life and career

Cleeves was born inHerefordshireand brought up in northDevonwhere she attendedBarnstaple Grammar School;[2]she studied English at theUniversity of Sussexbut dropped out and then took up various jobs, including cook at theFair Islebird observatory,auxiliary coastguard, probation officer, library outreach worker and child care officer.[3]

Television adaptations

Cleeves' work was first optioned for television after producerElaine Collinsdiscovered a copy of one of theVeranovels,The Crow Trap,while searching for holiday reading in anOxfamshop inNorth London,where she lived. Collins, the wife of actorPeter Capaldi,was the books executive forITV Studios,which was looking for a new female detective to fill its Sunday night drama slot.[4][5]Collins subsequently went on to buy the rights to Cleeves'Jimmy Pereznovels for the BBC, which turned them intoShetland.

She lives inWhitley Bay,[1]and is widowed with two daughters.[6]

Honours, awards, and media appearances

In 2006 she won theDuncan Lawrie Daggerfor her novelRaven Black,[1]and in 2008 she was elected to the prestigiousDetection Club.In 2014 Cleeves was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Sunderland.[7]In 2015, Cleeves was the Programming Chair for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival & theTheakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award.In 2015, she was shortlisted for theDagger in the LibraryUK Crime Writers' Association award for an author's body of work in British libraries (UK).[8]

Cleeves was chosen as the 2017 recipient of theCartier Diamond Daggerfrom theCrime Writers' Associationfor "sustained excellence" in crime fiction.[9]In February 2019 Ann Cleeves appeared onDesert Island Discs.[10]Cleeves was appointedOfficer of the Order of the British Empire(OBE) in the2022 New Year Honoursfor services to reading and libraries.[11][12]

In July 2022, Cleeves was awarded an honorary D.Litt. from Newcastle University for services to reading and libraries.[13]

The Vera Stanhope novels have been dramatised as the TV detective seriesVerabeginning in 2011; the Jimmy Perez novels as the TV seriesShetland;and the Matthew Venn novelThe Long Call(from Cleeves'Two Riversbook series) as the TV seriesThe Long Call(premiered autumn 2021). Some of the later episodes in theVeraandShetlandseries were original scripts based on Cleeves's characters.
