Anagaire(anglicised asAnnagry) is a village inThe Rossesdistrict ofCounty Donegal,Ireland. As of 2016,the population was 236.[2]

Name

The Irish and official name for Annagry isAnagaire,which in turn derives fromÁth na gCoiremeaning "ford of the cauldrons".[4]

Language

There are 2,354 people living in theAnagaireED and 55% of them are native Irish speakers. Annagry is in theGaeltachtregion which means the official language of the area isIrish.However, the use of the language has been in decline since the 1930s.[5]Despite this, it has an Irish language college in the summer months which runs courses for students fromEnglish-speaking areas of the country,Coláiste na Rosann.[6]

History

Annagry has a long history of emigration, much like the rest of County Donegal.[7]In the 1950s, a large number of locals left the area to work in other countries.

The local primary school isScoil Náisiúnta Dhubhthaighwith 144 pupils,[8]and the nearest secondary school is Rosses Community School inDungloe.[9]

Sport

The localGaelic Athletic Association(GAA) team isNaomh Mhuire CLGwhich serves the greaterLower Rossesarea.[10]Football(also known as soccer) is also popular in the village.[11]

Annagry is one mile fromDonegal International Airport(Carrickfinn Airport) which has daily flights toDublin Airportand four flights a week toGlasgow International Airport,which are operated byAer LingusandLoganairrespectively. Annagry is also serviced by aTFI Local Linkroute fromCrollyto Dungloe (Route 992[12]).

In the first week of June, the annual 'Annagry Festival' takes place.[13]Sharkey's Bar has been run by the Sharkey family since 1888.[14]The Caisleáin Óir hotel (formerly Jack's Bar)[15]and Duffy's Bar[16]are also public houses in Annagry. There is also a branch ofthe Copesupermarket chain in the village.[17]

There is also a business centre in Annagry that contains a pharmacy,[18]Post Office,[19]and a hair salon, alongside some office spaces located above.

The local chapel for the Annagry parish is the Saint Mary's Star of the Sea church, located near Caisleáin Óir.[20]
