Anurag Agrawal(born 1972) is an Indian pulmonologist, medical researcher, Dean of the Trivedi School of Biosciences atAshoka University,and the former director of theInstitute of Genomics and Integrative Biology,aCSIRinstitution. Known for his studies onlung diseases,Agrawal has been a senior fellow of theDBT-Wellcome Trust.TheCouncil of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him theShanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 2014.[1]He is also a recipient of theNational Bioscience Award for Career Developmentof theDepartment of Biotechnologywhich he received in 2015 and the 2020Sun Pharma Science Foundationaward in Medical Sciences (Clinical Research).

Anurag Agrawal joined theAll India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhiin 1989 for his MBBS after which he moved to the US for his residency at theBaylor College of Medicinewhere he also worked as a fellow at the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care and as an assistant professor.[2]In 2004, he enrolled for his doctoral studies at theVallabhbhai Patel Chest Instituteof theUniversity of Delhifrom where he secured a PhD in 2007. Subsequently, he joined theInstitute of Genomics and Integrative Biology(IGIB) of theCouncil of Scientific and Industrial Researchand served as the director.[3]In 2022, he joinedAshoka Universityas the Dean, Biosciences and Health Research, heading theTrivedi School of Biosciences.

Agrawal's research covers the fields oflung diseases,asthmaand functional issues related tomitochondriaand he is credited with establishing a functional link between the three diseases, thereby elucidating howstem cellsdonated mitochondrial cells to human lung cells that had turned dysfunctional.[4]He is involved intranslational researchon disorders such asobesity,asthma anddiabetes.[5]His interest in the interface of emerging technologies such as genomics and artificial intelligence with biology and medicine, led to his serving as co-chair of the Lancet and Financial Times commission on governing health futures 2030 and as a member of 'Responsible AI' subgroup of the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).[6][7]During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led discovery of the Delta variant, served as co-chair of the World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Advisory Group for SARS CoV2 viral evolution and also as a member of the pathogens project of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.[8][9][10]

Agrawal received the Lady Tata Young Researcher Award in 2010,[3]the same year as he was selected for the Swarnajayanthi fellowship of the Department of Biotechnology.[11]TheCouncil of Scientific and Industrial Researchawarded him theShanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize,one of the highest Indian science awards in 2014.[12]A year later, he received theNational Bioscience Award for Career Developmentfor the year 2015.[13]He is also a recipient of the senior fellowship of theWellcome TrustDBTIndia Alliance.[2]He received the 2020Sun Pharma Science Foundationaward in Medical Sciences (Clinical Research).
