InMandaeism,Anush(Classical Mandaic:ࡀࡍࡅࡔ,romanized:Anuš) (also spelledEnnosh[1]) orAnush Uthra(Classical Mandaic:ࡀࡍࡅࡔ ࡏࡅࡕࡓࡀ,romanized:Anuš ʿUtra) is anuthra(angel or guardian) from theWorld of Light.Anush is considered to be the Mandaean equivalent ofEnos.[2]

Prayers in theQolastafrequently contain the recurring formula "In the name ofHibil,Šitil,and Anuš "(Classical Mandaic:ࡁࡔࡅࡌࡀࡉࡄࡅࡍ ࡖࡄࡉࡁࡉࡋ ࡅࡔࡉࡕࡉࡋ ࡅࡀࡍࡅࡔb-šumaihun ḏ-Hibil u-Šitil u-Anuš).[3]

TheMshunia Kushtais considered to be theshkina(dwelling) of Anush Uthra.[4]

Overview[edit]

According to theMandaean scriptures,including theQolastā,theBook of JohnandGenzā Rabbā,Enosh is cognate with the angelicsoteriologicalfigureAnush Uthra,[5](Classical Mandaic:ࡀࡍࡅࡔ ࡏࡅࡕࡓࡀ,romanized:Anuš ʿUtra,sometimes translated as "Excellent Ennosh" ),[1]who is spoken of as the son[6]or brother[7]ofShitil(Seth). Anush is alightworldbeing (uthra) who taughtJohn the Baptistand performed many of the same miracles within Jerusalem typically ascribed to Jesus by Christians.[8]
