History[edit]

The 989 region split off fromarea code 517in 2001. Before then, 517 had served most of the eastern half of the Lower Peninsula (except the southeast) for 54 years and had been the only one of Michigan's three original area codes to have never been split.

Prior to October 2021, area code 989 had telephone numbers assigned for thecentral office code988. In 2020,988was designated nationwide as a dialing code for theNational Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which created a conflict for exchanges that permitseven-digit dialing. This area code was therefore scheduled to transition toten-digit dialingby October 24, 2021.[2]
