Arioaldwas theLombardking ofItalyfrom 626 to 636. Duke ofTurin,he married the princessGundeberga,daughter of KingAgilulfand his queenTheodelinda.He was, unlike his father-in-law, anArianwho did not acceptCatholicism.

Arioald deposed Agilulf's heirAdaloaldwith the support of the nobility,[1]for Adaloald had gone mad. Upon becoming king, he had his wife locked up in amonastery,accusing her of plotting against him withTasson,duke of Friuli.He also reestablished Arianism in the Lombard kingdom. His only recorded wars were against theAvars,whom he succeeded in repelling during an attempted invasion of northeast Italy.[2]
