Charles Arthur Smith(born March 1, 1960)[1]is an Americanchefwho has worked for formerFloridagovernorsBob GrahamandJeb Bushand until 2007 was personal chef toOprah Winfrey.[2]His expertise isSouthern cuisine.

While attendingFlorida State University,he completed culinary internships withThe Greenbrierand theWalt Disney Magic Kingdom College Program.[3]

Smith has written three cookbooks:Back to the Table;Kitchen Life: Real Food for Real Families;andBack to the Family.He contributed recipes and cooking advice toThe Spectrum,the newest book by cardiologist and New York Times bestselling author Dean Ornish. He edits a monthly article on Oprah and contributes articles toO, The Oprah Magazine.[4]His latest cookbook isArt Smith's Healthy Comfort(published by Harper One 2013).

Common Threads

Smith founded the non-profit charity Common Threads, which is focused on community health through food and nutrition. The nonprofit provides cooking and nutrition classes, along with a curriculum that aims to teach community educators how to create healthy, culturally accessible and inexpensive meals.[5]

He is on the board of directors of “Kids Café”, a nutrition program for children inMinneapolis.Smith owns and runs a restaurant inChicagocalled TABLE fifty-two as well as Art and Soul inWashington, D.C.[6][7]In 2009, Smith raised $10,000 for Common Threads as a participant on the television showTop Chef Masters,Season 1.[7][8]

Smith has cooked for formerPresident Barack ObamaandCarl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.[9]In addition to being chef for Florida GovernorBob Graham,he cooked for Florida GovernorJeb Bush,Romero Britto,film starsAli LandryandEduardo Verásteguiamongst many others. He has also appeared onExtreme Makeover: Home Edition.[10] Smith also appeared in a cooking segment inLady Gaga's 2011ABCspecialA Very Gaga Thanksgivingin which he and Gaga prepared aThanksgivingmeal ofturkeyandwaffles.Months later, Smith became the head chef of Joanne Trattoria, anItalian restaurantinNew York Cityowned by Lady Gaga's parents.[11]

Personal

Smith lives inJasper, Floridawith his husband, Jesus Salgueiro, a painter. The two married at the Lincoln Memorial in 2011, after being together 10 years. They donate their time to many causes, from children's cooking classes to humanitarian aid.[15]He and his husband have adopted five children.[16]
