History

Atyrau Airways was established in 1996 as an airline as well as the operating company of Atyrau Airport. It became part of theAir Kazakhstan Group(which also comprisedAir KazakhstanandIrtysh Avia) in December 1999. In November 2000, the ownership of Atyrau Airways and Airport was transferred toEuro-Asia Air,a subsidiary of state petroleum companyKazTransOil.[1]On 13 July 2009, Atyrau Airways was included in theList of air carriers banned in the European Union,along with all other Kazakh airlines with the exception ofAir Astanadue to the poor maintenance record of the country.[3]Shortly thereafter (in October), itsairline licensewas revoked.[4]
