BGYO(formerlyStar Hunt Academy BoysorSHA Boys) is a five-member Filipinoboy bandformed in 2018 byABS-CBN's Star Hunt Academy, consisting of Gelo,Akira,JL,Mikki, andNate.Dubbed the "Aces of P-pop",[4]BGYO officially debuted on January 29, 2021, with their single "The Light".[5]

After their debut in January 2021, BGYO released their second single, "He's Into Her",as part of the official soundtrack of the Philippineromantic comedyseries of thesame name.[6]The song led to the group's first achievement, earning them the "Best Theme Song" award at the2021 Asian Academy Creative Awards.[7]Their debut album,The Light,achieved record-breaking success, toppingiTunesPhilippines' Top 100 albums chart for 12 consecutive days, making it the longest top charting album by a Filipino act on the platform.[8]BGYO's achievements also reached the international stage, with the group featured inGrammy's"The Many Sounds of Asian Pop"listiclein 2023.[9]

Name[edit]

The group's name is an acronym for "Becoming the change,Going further,You and I,Originally Filipino ".[4]Contrary to the belief of many, the group's name is not the shortened form of the Filipino wordbagyo,which meansstorm,particularly atropical cyclone.[10]

History[edit]

2018–2020: Formation and introduction[edit]

In 2018, ABS-CBN launched the Star Hunt Academy program, a project led by entertainment head Laurenti Dyogi for the purpose of introducing Filipino talent in the international market.[11][12][13]250 auditionees ranging from ages 16–19 from different places in the Philippines were evaluated, from which the first set of male trainees were selected. It was initially planned to debut a 7-member idol boy group but was minimized to five. The final lineup ended with Akira, Gelo, JL, Mikki, and Nate.[11][14]They were trained for two years under Filipino andSouth Koreanmentors from MU Doctor Academy.[15]Vocal coach Kitchy Molina and Austrian-native dance coachMickey Perzwere some of the notable Filipino mentors.[16][11][17]

On August 3, 2019, the five members were officially introduced as the Star Hunt trainees in the online pre-show of thePBB Otso Big Nightthrough a performance.[18]They had their first outdoor performance with live audience in their first-ever mall show in Taguig.[citation needed]They have also attended the 2019Southeast Asian Gamesthanksgiving celebration.[19]

In May 2020, Dyogi released a dance practice video of Akira, Gelo, Mikki, and Nate dancing toSeventeen's "Let Me Hear You Say" to show their training progress.[20]In the subsequent months, the academy has released vlogs of the trainees onYouTubeand performance videos onTwitter.[21]The group was also invited to perform on the "Happy Hallyu Day 4" which lasted from August 22 and 29.[22]On October 18, BGYO as "SHA Boys" became part of theASAP Natin 'Toand performedBTS' hit song "On".[12]On October 31, they also performed on the "2020 Philippines-Korea Cultural Exchange Festival".[23]

On December 4, 2020, the official debut month of the group in January 2021 was announced, together with the contract signing withStar Magicand record labelStar Music.[24][25]On December 6, the group performed on the opening ofPinoy Big Brother: Connect.[12][26]On December 12, the group went viral with theirIt's Showtime's performance ofSarah Geronimohit songs "Tala"/"Kilometro.[27]

Ahead of their debut, Star Hunt Academy released a series of teasers for the group. On January 13, they revealed the group's official name accompanied with its official logo.[28][25]MU Doctor collaborated with South Korean producers Rogan & Ddank for BGYO's debut single "The Light"released on January 29. The English lyrics were written byKorean-Americancomposer and songwriter Distract, and theTagaloglyrics written by the members themselves to "reflect their own story in the song".[17]The single waschoreographedby Lay Back, known to have worked withSuperM,Hyolyn,andZico.[29][30]

In March 2021, BGYO was featured in the Spring 2021 issue ofL'Officiel.[31]On March 31, the group was announced as "MYX Spotlight Artist"for the month of April.[32]On April 9, BGYO was revealed to record the official soundtrack ofiWantTFC's digitalPhilippineromance comedyseriesHe's Into Her.[33]On April 21, BGYO performed on theWish 107.5 Buswith their debut single.[34]On April 23, 2021, the second singleHe's Into Herwas released.[6][35]On the same day, BGYO was added on the roster ofSpotifyRADAR program.[36]On May 21, the group's first collaboration single "Feel Good Pilipinas", withKZ Tandingan,was released.[37]On May 17, BGYO participated in the 4th Season ofCoke Studio Philippines' "Itodo Mo Beat Mo" where they performed the choreographed rendition of Keiko Necesario's "While We Are Young".[38][39]Three days after, an original composition of BGYO and Necesario titled "Runnin'"was revealed.[40]On May 29, the group also took part on the virtual red carpet premiere of the seriesHe's Into Her.[41]

In June 2021, "BGYO Live Zoom Party" took place, a virtual international fan meet,[42]where they performedThe Light,"He's Into Her" and a cover of the songUn Añoby the Colombian singer-songwriterSebastián Yatraand the Mexican pop rock bandReik.[43]They also got the chance to be interviewed onSBS PopAsiaon June 10.[44]The group also made an appearance on the official debut of their sister groupBINI,on June 11.[45]BGYO embarked on their first global caravan named "Feel Good PilipinasGlobal Independence Day Caravan "along with various artists, which lasted from June 11–20.[A]They also participated on "ALL FOR ONE (Canadian Multiculturalism Day): Celebrating Unity in Diversity", on June 26.[B][46]In July 2021, BGYO fronted "The Music Issue" of PARCINQ Magazine with the tagline "P-POP POWER".[47]On August 6, they performed "He's Into Her" at the "He's Into Her: The Benison Ball".[C][48]On August 7, the group experienced their first ever performance on an award show throughMYX Music Awards 2021.[49]On August 20, BGYO released their sophomore singleThe Baddest,[50]withLiza Soberanoon the music video.[51]On August 25, #BGYO was included onTwitter's "Top Hashtags in the Philippines" for the first half of 2021.[52]On August 28–29, the group was invited to perform on the "Happy Hallyu Day 5: A Virtual Fest".[53]"Kulay"was released in September 23 as a theme song of theMiss Universe Philippines 2021National Costume Competition[54]

In October 2021, the group released their debut albumThe Light,which includes "The Light", "The Baddest", "He's Into Her"; five new songs "When I'm with You", "Kundiman", "Sabay", "Fly Away" and "Rocketman", four international versions of "The Light" —Bahasa Indonesia,Thai,SpanishandJapanese.[55]On November 6–7, the first eversiblinggroup concert in thePinoy pophistory, "ONE DREAM: TheBINIand BGYO Concert ",[D]took place.[56]On November 12, the group took part on the officialChristmastheme song ofABS CBN's Christmas Station ID,[E]entitled "Andito Tayo Para sa Isa't Isa".[57]On November 21, a joint virtual fan meet with BGYO's sibling groupBINIfor their Indonesian and Thai fans, "Global Party Asia Tour", took place.[58]On November 29, BGYO performed on34th Awit Awards[59]

In December 2021, BGYO appeared and performed on their first international award show through the2021 Asian Academy Creative Awards,of which, they are also a finalist for the "Best Theme Song" category for "He's Into Her".[60]On December 3, the group plunge into their first international concert, "1MXDubai2021 (Filipino Music Festival) ",[F]along with various artists inDubai World Trade Centre,United Arab Emirates.[61]

The release ofTumitigil Ang Mundoon July 13, 2022, marked the new chapter of BGYO's music career. Legal action[edit]

On June 19, 2024, BGYO filed cyberlibel and unjust vexation complaints against netizens who have been spreading false information to attack their group.[106][107]

Artistry[edit]

BGYO has cited thatK-popgroups likeBTS,Exo,Got7,andWanna One,and artists likeShawn Mendes,Gary Valenciano,Erik Santos,andRegine Velasquezwere their musical inspirations.[108][109]In an interview withMyx Global,[110]the group has also citedJabbawockeezas an influence, with Nate saying, "Jabbawockeez inspired me to get into music, and would even copy how they would dance".[111]While inspired by some K-pop groups, BGYO emphasizes their Filipino identity as a strength, as evident in their music, songwriting, and style.[112]

BGYO's debut song, "The Light",was a genre-bending that infusesurban,electronic,andR&Belements. It became popular among the younger generation as it speaks about empowerment, hope, and self-love.[17]

A year after their official debut, BGYO have gained several endorsement deals in various industries in their career. On February 10, 2022, BGYO became one of the ambassadors ofXiaomiRedmi Note 11series.[113]Since February 17, 2022, BGYO have beenH&Mbrand ambassador and became the first Filipino artist to be featured on the brand's initiative "Music x ME" campaign, which aims to promote and put the spotlight on up and coming OPM artists.[114]On April 2, 2022, BGYO was introduced as the fresh faces ofMentosand the voices of the brand's newest campaign jingle "Say Yes! To Fresh".[115]BGYO has also served as the brand ambassadors forTNT,ChowkingandSpritewith their voices in the campaign "Cool Ka Lang".[116]
