Bad Blankenburg(German pronunciation:[batˈblaŋkənbʊʁk] ) is aspa townin the district ofSaalfeld-Rudolstadt,inThuringia,Germany.It is situated 6 km southwest ofRudolstadt,and 37 km southeast ofErfurt.It is most famous for being the location of the firstkindergartenofFriedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel,in 1837.
To the north of it, on an eminence, rise the fine ruins of the castle ofGreifenstein,built by the German kingHenry I,and from 1275 to 1583 the seat of acadet branchof thecounts of Schwarzburg.[3]
In the nineteenth century, Bad Blankenburg was part of the smallprincipalityofSchwarzburg-Rudolstadt.
Bad Blankenburg is the headquarters ofDeutsche Evangelische Allianz,a cooperative network of most Protestant churches in Germany.
