Bae Su-ji(Korean:배수지;born October 10, 1994), better known by thestage nameBae SuzyormononymouslyasSuzy,is a South Korean singer, actress, and model. She is a former member of thegirl groupMiss AunderJYP Entertainment.She made her debut as an actress in the hit television seriesDream High(2011) and has gone on to appear in series such asGu Family Book(2013),Uncontrollably Fond(2016),While You Were Sleeping(2017),Vagabond(2019),Start-Up(2020),Anna(2022), andDoona!(2023). She made her film debut inArchitecture 101(2012), and, following its success, has been hailed as "The Nation's First Love" in her home country.[2][3][4]

Early life

Bae was born inBuk District,Gwangju,South Korea on October 10, 1994,[5]to Bae Wan-young, former coach of the Korean national youthtaekwondoteam, and Jeong Hyun-sook.[6][7]She has an elder sister and a younger brother.[8]She attended theSchool of Performing Arts Seouland graduated in 2013.[9]Before debuting, she was an online shopping model[10]and was part of astreet dancingcrew to show her parents that she was serious about becoming anidol.[11]

Career

2009–2010: Debut with Miss A

In 2009, Bae auditioned forMnetSuperstar Kand made it through the preliminary round but was ultimately eliminated. However, she caught the attention of a scout fromJYP Entertainmentand soon became a trainee after singing an excerpt fromYounha'sLove.[12][13]

In March 2010, Bae became a member of the groupMiss A.[14]

2010–2016: Rising popularity and acting debut

In October 2010, Bae became the fixed host forMBCShow! Music CorealongsideMinhoandOnew,both members ofShinee,andJiyeon,ofT-ara.[15]Bae later hosted other events such as theSeoul Music Awards,[16]Golden Disc Awards,[17]andMnet 20's Choice Awards[18]where she won an award under the category "Hot New Star of 2011".[19]

Apart from her group activities, Bae also ventured into acting. She made her acting debut in the teen dramaDream High,which aired onKBSfrom January 3 to February 28.[20]She also released anOSTfor it, titled "Winter Child". The drama was a local success, earning high viewership ratings during its two-month run, and also gained popularity in other countries.[21]At theKBS Drama Awards,Bae won the Best New Actress award as well as the Best Couple award with co-starKim Soo-hyun.[22]She also became a cast member inKBS' reality showInvincible Youth2.The show began filming on October 19 and aired on November 11.[23]

In 2012, Bae made her film debut withArchitecture 101,playing the younger version of the female protagonist.[24][25]Architecture 101was one of the ten most-watched films in South Korea in the first quarter of 2012, and achieved over 4.1 million admissions nine weeks after its theater release, a new box-office record set for Korean melodramas.[26]The same year, Bae played a supporting role in the romantic comedyBig,written by theHong sistersand starringGong YooandLee Min-jung.[27][28]

Bae was the first Korean female celebrity to win a singer rookie award, drama rookie award, film rookie award, and variety rookie award. She received theBest New Actressaward at the48th Baeksang Arts Awardsfor her acting performance inArchitecture 101,[29]and the Best Newcomer award in the variety category at theKBS Entertainment Awardsfor her stint inInvincible Youth 2.[30]

In 2013, she starred in the fusionsageukGu Family BookalongsideLee Seung-gi.[31][32]She received acting recognition at theMBC Drama Awards,winning the Top Excellence award[33]and at theSeoul International Drama Awards,winning the Outstanding Actress award.[34]She also featured on the variety showHealing Camp,becoming the youngest guest on the show.[35][36]

In May 2014, Bae was cast in the filmThe Sound of a FlowerasJin Chae-seon,Korea's first femalepansorisinger.[37]The film, which was released in 2015, depicts the struggle of a singer who is not allowed to perform in public because of her gender during theJoseonera.[38]To prepare herself for the role, Bae received training in pansori for a year.[39]The same year, she collaborated with Taiwanese singer-actorShow Loin the single "Together In Love", featured in his albumReality Show.[40]

In January 2016, Bae released a digital single titled "Dream"in collaboration withExo'sBaekhyun.[41]The song debuted at number one onGaon's weekly digital chart[42]and proceeded to win theBest Collaborationaward at theMnet Asian Music Awards.[43]She then starred in the melodramaUncontrollably FondwithKim Woo-bin.[44][45]Bae released two OSTs for the drama, including a self-composed song.[46]

In September 2016, Bae's wax figure atMadame Tussauds Hong Kongwent on display.[47]She is the first Korean female celebrity to receive a wax-likeness of herself at Madame Tussauds.[48]

2017–present: Solo debut and new agency

In early 2017, Bae made her debut as a solo artist with the EPYes? No?.[49][50]Her pre-release single "Pretend" was released on January 17 and achieved an all-kill on music charts.[51]The title track "Yes, No, Maybe" was released a week after, on January 24.[52]In February 2017, Bae released a duet with singer Park Won, titled "Don't Wait for Your Love".[53][54]She then returned to television, starring alongsideLee Jong-sukin the fantasy romanceWhile You Were Sleeping,which premiered in September 2017.[55][56]On December 27, following the announcement ofMin's departure, JYP Entertainment announced that Miss A had disbanded.[57]Bae renewed her contract with JYP Entertainment.[58]

On January 22, 2018, Bae's pre-release single "In Love with Someone Else"[59]was released and achieved a real-time all-kill.[60]Her secondEP,titledFaces of Love,was released on January 29,[61]with the title track "Holiday".[62]On February 14, the music video for her b-side track, "Sober", was released.[63]On March 9, Bae released her fourth music video for the single "Midnight", featuring a piano ensemble byYiruma.[64]

On March 31, 2019, Bae left JYP Entertainment following the expiration of her contract. She then signed a contract with acting agencyManagement SOOP.[65][66]She then starred in the spy-action dramaVagabond,playing a secret agent;[67][68]and action filmAshfall,playing the role ofHa Jung-woo's wife.[69]

In 2020, Bae starred in the romantic dramaStart-Upas an aspiring entrepreneur who dreams of becoming Korea'sSteve Jobs.[70]

On February 17, 2022, she made her comeback as a singer after 4 years with a single titled "Satellite".[71]Three months later, she joined musician Kang Seung-won's 2nd album project, singing the fifth track "Because I Love You", a ballad about shy love feelings.[72]The same year, she starred inCoupang Play's psychological thrillerAnna,playing the title role of Lee Anna/Lee Yu-mi,[73]and was praised for her acting skills and expression of Anna's emotions by audiences and critics alike.[74][75]On October 6, Bae released the digital single "Cape" and its music video.[76]

In October 2023, Suzy starred in the Netflix seriesDoona!as the titular character, who is a retired idol having a romantic relationship with a university student portrayed byYang Se-jong.[77]

After starting her acting career, Bae became one of South Korea's hottest stars, and following the success ofArchitecture 101in 2012 she was nicknamed "The Nation's First Love" (국민첫사랑;Gungmin Cheotsarang) thanks to the innocent charm of her character.[78][79][80]Writing for magazineIze,journalist Kim Na-ra named Bae,Im Yoon-ahandIUthe most in-demand troika of all-round entertainers of the 2020s in the fields of television, film, and advertising in South Korea, identifying them as successors toKim Tae-hee,Song Hye-kyo,andJun Ji-hyun.[81]

Bae became one of the most in-demand endorsers in her home country, and has been hailed as a "CF Queen" due to numerous endorsement deals ranging from cosmetics, apparel, up to basic commodities like sugar.[82]She made more than10 billion in 2013 with more than 14 endorsement deals.[83]The term "Suzy power" was coined to describe the surge in sales experienced by the companies she promoted.[84][85]Some products were named after her, such as a perfume byThe Face Shop,[86]contact lenses by Clalen,[87]a line ofGuessjeans,[88]and two lipsticks byLancôme.[89]In fall 2015, she designed the Bonnie Bag forBean Pole.[90]

Philanthropy

In April 2014, Bae donated50 million to the victims of theSewol ferry sinking,to be used for the relief work of the Sewol ferry missing and survivors and for the families of the victims.[106]The same year, she registered herself for the organ and tissue donation.[107]In April 2015, Bae joined the Social Welfare Community Chest as the 791st member of the Honor Society, a group of major donors with more than100 million.[108]

In June 2016, Bae donated10 million to the low-income families in her hometown ofGwangju.[109]In March 2017, she donated100 million to the Life Sharing Practice Headquarters to be used for patient treatment expenses.[110]On her birthday in 2018, Bae donated100 million to the Life Sharing Practice Headquarters to be used for the treatment of children with cancer and leukemia.[111]

In April 2019, Bae donated100 million to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association to help the victims of the large-scalewildfires in Gangwon Province.[112]On her birthday in 2019, she made a100 million donation for children with incurable diseases.[113]
