Background and battle

Guru Gobind Singh's family got separated andMani Singh,along with other Sikhs, tookMata Sundar KaurandMata Sahib Kaurto Delhi, whereas Gobind, thePanj Piare,Ajit Singh,Jujhar Singhand a handful of Sikh warriors went toChamkaurfor the last stand.[citation needed]

Even as Mughal GeneralWazir Khanpromised Gobind safe passage after the siege of Anandpur, he still pursued the survivors. At Shahi Tibbi, Jiwan Singh was killed and the Sikhs were destroyed while crossing theSarsa River,with Gobind's two younger sons,Zorawar SinghandFateh Singhbeing captured and laterextrajudicially executed.Gobind was defeated the next day atChamkaur.[3]
