Behzad Lucknavi(bornSardar Hasan Khan;1 January 1900 – 10 October 1974[1]) was a PakistaniUrdu poetand lyricist. He primarily wrotenaatsandghazalsand sometimes radio plays for theAll India Radio,Delhi and later forRadio Pakistanafteremigrating to Pakistan.[2]
He started participating inmushairasat age of twelve. Then veteran radio personalityZulfiqar Ali Bukhariintroduced him toAll India Radio.[3]
He wrote film song lyrics for seventeen films, includingRoti(1942),Taj Mahal(1941) andDhanwan(1937).[4]
Biography
[edit]He was born as Sardar Hasan Khan on 1 January 1900 in United Province,British India(in modern-dayLucknow,India).[3]He initially worked in theIndian Railways[5]but later for theAll India Radioat₹120 per month.[3]He was later employed by theRadio Pakistanwhere he used to recite naats as part ofcongregational prayer.He also wrote a number of radio plays.[3]
As a ghazal writer, he contributed to theUrdu literatureof Pakistan.[6]An Indianghazalsinger,Begum Akhtarfirst gained her recognition after she sang her first ghazalDiwana banana hai toh, toh diwana bana dewritten by Lakhnavi.[7]He also wrote film song lyrics, including "Mere Liye Woh Gham-e-Intezaar" for the filmAnokha Pyar(1948) sung byLata Mangeshkar.[8]
Lucknavi's ghazal,Aey Jazba-e-Dil Gar Mein Chahun, Har Cheez Muqabil Aajayeis very popular in Pakistan and has been sung by many singers there.[9]

Personal life
[edit]He spent his last days in difficult circumstances due to personalfinancial crisisandmedical complications.He then submitted a request to theKarachi Municipal Corporationfor financial assistance. He was givenPKR1,000 for his surgery. The commissioner ofKarachilater offered him a government job atprimary schoolas a teacher but he refused the post.[2]
Death
[edit]He died on 10 October 1974 in Karachi, Pakistan.[5]
