Bernard Donaghey(23 December 1882 – 1 July 1916), sometimes known asBarney Donaghey,[5]was an Irish professionalfootballer,who played as aninside forwardin theFootball LeagueforBurnleyandManchester United.[1]He also played in theScottish LeagueforHibernianand in his nativeIrelandforDerry Celtic(four spells),Ulster,Belfast CelticandGlentoran.[4][3]Donaghey was capped byIrelandat international level and represented theIrish League.[6][7]
Personal life[edit]
Donaghey was aCatholicand was married.[5][8]Prior to theFirst World War,Donaghey was areservistin theBritish Armyand in early 1915, during the second year of the war, he enlisted as a private in theRoyal Inniskilling Fusiliers.[3]He saw action atGallipoliand was wounded in the head byshrapneland evacuated to a hospital inTanta,Egypt.[3][5]After being deployed to theWestern Frontin 1916, Donaghey was killed on thefirst day on the Somme,during his battalion's attack onGermantrenchlines and the Y-Ravinestrongpoint,south ofBeaumont-Hamel.[3]His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on theThiepval Memorial.[2][9]
