Korean clansare groups of people that share the samepaternal ancestor. They are indicated by the combination of abongwan(Korean:본관;lit.place of origin) and a family name. For example, theJeonju Yi clanis identified by the cityJeonjuand family nameYi,theGimhae Kim clanis identified by the cityGimhaeand family nameKim,and theAphae Jeong clanis identified by the islandAphae-doand family nameJeong.

Korean clans are used to distinguish clans that happen to share the samefamily nameThebongwansystem identifiesdescent groupsbygeographicplace of origin.[1]However, a clan name is not treated as a part of a Korean person's name.[citation needed]Thebongwanand the family name are passed on from a father to his children, thus ensuring that person in the samepaternal lineagesharing the same combination of thebongwanand the family name. Abongwandoes not change by marriage oradoption.

Bongwanare used to distinguish different lineages that bear the samefamily name. For example, theGyeongjuKim and theGimhaeKim are considered different clans, even though they happen to share the same family nameKim.In this case, Gyeongju and Gimhae are the respectivebongwanof these clans.

Different family names sharing the samebongwansometimes trace their origin to a common paternal ancestor, e.g. theGimhae Kim[ko]clan and theGimhae Heo[ko]clan shareSuro of Geumgwan Gayaas their common paternal ancestor, though such cases are exceptional.

According to the population and housing census of 2000 conducted by theSouth Korean government, there are a total of 286surnamesand 4,179 clans.[2]

Restrictions on marriage and adoption

[edit]

Traditionally, a man and a woman in the sameclancould not marry, so the combination of thebongwanand thefamilyname of a husband had to differ from that of a wife. Until 1997, this was also the law, but this was ruled asunconstitutional.

Whenadopting a child, the adoptive father and the adopted child must share the same combination of thebongwanand thefamily name. However, in exceptional circumstances, adoptive parentscan change an adopted child’s family name for the adopted child'swelfare. In this case, the adoptive parents must visit afamily courtto request permission to change the family name.[3]
