TheBritish High CommissioninOttawa,Ontario,is the maindiplomatic missionof theUnited KingdominCanada.It is located at 80Elgin Streetindowntown Ottawa,across the street from theNational Arts Centreand not far fromParliament Hill.
History[edit]
The current building was opened in 1964 and designed byEric Bedford.Previously the site had been home to the Union Hotel, founded in the 1850s but demolished in 1962.
TheHigh Commissioner'sposition was created in 1928 after theBalfour Declaration of 1926and was the first such posting for Britain. The present High Commissioner isSusannah Goshko.The UK hasConsulates-GeneralinToronto,Montreal,Calgary,andVancouver.It hasHonorary ConsulsinSt. John's,Halifax,Quebec City,andWinnipeg.The High Commission also represents theBritish Overseas Territoriesin Canada.
The High Commissioner resides atEarnscliffe,a mansion on theOttawa River.
In 2019, the UK Government announced a new building would be constructed for the High Commission, on property next to Earnscliffe. The new building is scheduled to open in July 2022.[1]However, the building remains under construction as of July 2023.
