Brotatois a 2023top-downshoot 'em uproguelitevideo game created by Frenchindependentdeveloper Thomas Gervraud under the studio name Blobfish. It was first released viaSteamearly accessin 2022, during which it sold over one million copies.Brotatoreceived positive reviews from critics and players, and it was later ported to multiple platforms.

Gameplay

The player controls one of several potatoes in atop-down perspective.Many of them areunlockedat the beginning and have different starting attributes. The goal is to defeat as many enemy waves as possible with the potato. The player can upgrade and improve various attributes and weapons after each wave, which can be bought with materials collected.Brotatois anshoot 'em up.Shooting is automatically handled by the computer but players can change this in the settings to manual aiming.[2]

Brotatois the fourth game by Blobfish, a one-manindiestudio based inLyon, Franceat the time of development.[3]It entered theSteamearly accessforWindowson September 27, 2022, followed by the full release on June 23, 2023.[4]

TheAndroidandiOSports, developed and published by Erabit Studios were released on March 28, 2023. On mobile,Brotatois available infree-to-playandpremiumversions.[5]TheNintendo Switchversion was released on August 3, 2023.[4]Versions forPlayStation 4,PlayStation 5,Xbox OneandXbox Series X/Swere released on January 30, 2024, also available viaXbox Game Passfrom launch.[6]

In April 2024, the company announced a free upcoming update for local co-op, as well as their first paidDLCtitled "Abyssal Terrors" to be released in 2024.[7][8]

Reception

Rock Paper Shotgun,who reviewed it during early access, likened it to "a hitFlash gameonNewgroundsin 2006 ". Though they enjoyed the retro gameplay, they said death came a bit too easily.[2]TouchArcadesaid that although it seems at first to be a simpleVampire Survivorsclone, it introducesrogueliteelements and is more strategic, giving it a distinct identity.[10]Screen Rantcalls the game mechanics addictive, quick and easy accessible with of lot of freedom in strategy and experimentation. The website lists it as one of the best Indie Games 2022.[11]Digital Trendscalled it a "smart evolution of theVampire Survivorsformula "that focuses more on dynamiccharacter builds.[12]

It was one of the most popular roguelite games on Steam in 2022 and 2023,[13]and received "overwhelmingly positive" reviews from users.[12]As of September 2022, it has sold over a million copies.[14]It was nominated for "bestSteam Deckgame "at the 2023Steam Awards.[15]
