Bruce Malmuth(February 4, 1934 – June 29, 2005) was an American film director,[1]best known for his work in the action and thriller genres and for his acting role inThe Karate Kidfilm franchise.
Biography

[edit]Malmuth was the brother of aeronautical engineerNorman Malmuthand Daniel S. Malmuth,[2]an executive forColumbia Picturesandsecond unit director.Malmuth began making documentaries while serving with theU.S. ArmySignal Corps,where he met baseball announcerWalter Red Barber.After his military career, Malmuth directed theNew York Yankeegames atWPIXradio before entering the film and television industry.
Film and television career
[edit]Malmuth's directoral debut wasFore Play,an anthology comedy film which he co-directed withJohn G. Avildsen.He was best known for directingSylvester Stallonein the1981thrillerNighthawksandSteven Seagalin the 1990 political action filmHard to KillandThe Man Who Wasn't There,starringSteve Guttenberg.
An avid sports and martial arts fan, Malmuth played the role of ring announcer in1984'sThe Karate Kid,among other small film roles. He also worked on the television seriesBeauty and the Beastand the Emmy-winningABC Afterschool SpecialA Boy's Dream,which featuredDarryl Strawberry.
Death
[edit]On June 29, 2005, atCedars-Sinai Medical Center,Malmuth died at the age of 71 ofesophageal cancer.His son, Evan Malmuth, whom he raised as a single father, is an actor and writer.
