Originally populated by people who spokeProto-Italic,Euganeiand then by the CelticGauls, the area now known as Cadore was later conquered by theRomansduring the second century BC and became part of theRegio XVenetia et Histria.

In theLate Antiquityera, Cadore was occupied byinvading Germanic populationsand was first declared part of theDuchy of Carinthiaand finally, in 1077, part of thePatriarchate of Aquileia. From 1135 to 1335, Cadore was ruled by the da Camino family, the Counts of Cadore, who later became theSignorifamily ofTreviso. It was briefly annexed toTyroland again was ceded to thePatriarchs of Aquileia. However, thecomuniof Cadore always enjoyed a certain degree of self-government.

When theRepublic of Veniceconquered the neighbouringFriuliregion in 1420 and put an end to thetemporal powerof the Patriarchs, the rulers of Cadore were forced to choose between aligning with Venetia or theImperial. It declared its loyalty to the former, becoming one of many parts of theTerra ferma, administered by a localpodestà.

The conflict between Venice and the Empire broke out again at the beginning of the 16th century, during theWar of the League of Cambrai. In the prelude to the war, the Venetians and the Cadorines defeatedMaximilian I, Holy Roman Emperorin 1508 at theBattle of Valle di Cadore, and again in 1509. Then, in 1511, Maximilian conquered the town ofCortina d'Ampezzo, which was incorporated into the Empire in 1516. Cortina, formerly considered part of Cadore, has since developed a distinct identity.
