It goes back a formerdiocesein theRoman provinceofAsiaandLydiain westernTurkey.It belonged to theecclesiastical provinceofSardis.

Cerasa, identifiable withElieslerin modernTurkey,is an ancientepiscopal seeof theRoman provinceofLydiain thecivilDiocese of Asia.It was part of thePatriarchate of Constantinopleand wassuffraganof theArchdiocese of Sardis.

The lists of participants in theecumenical councilshave handed the names of four bishops of this ancient episcopal:

Cerasa survives today astitular bishopbut has been vacant since May 2, 2001.
