Cerignola(Italian pronunciation:[tʃeriɲˈɲɔːla];Cerignolano:Ceregnòule[tʃərəɲˈɲɔwlə] ) is a town andcomuneofApulia,Italy,in theprovince of Foggia,40 kilometres (25 miles) southeast from the town ofFoggia.It has the third-largest land area of anycomunein Italy, at 593.71 square kilometres (229.23 sq mi), afterRomeandRavennaand it has the largest land area of anycomunein Italy among those that are not the provincial capital. In 2017, it had a population of 58,534.[2]
Geography
[edit]The large municipality is located in theValley of Ofanto,a strip of land that runs alongside the homonymous river delimiting the southern edge of the TavoliereTavoliere.Cerignola is situated in south of theprovince of Foggia,and spans from theSalt Marshes of Margherita di Savoiato the borders withBasilicataregion. It borders withAscoli Satriano,Canosa di Puglia,Carapelle,Lavello,Manfredonia,Ordona,Orta Nova,San Ferdinando di Puglia,Stornara,Stornarella,TrinitapoliandZapponeta.[3]
Cerignola is the second biggest town ofCapitanatafor its number of inhabitants as well as for being the largest agriculture centre in its province.
History
[edit]Cerignola occupies the site ofFurfane,a station on the ancient RomanVia TraianabetweenCanusiumandHerdoniae.[4]
It was amunicipiumduring the Roman Empire. In theMiddle Ages,as part of theKingdom of Naples,in 1418 it became a fief of theCaracciolofamily.
In 1503 the Spaniards underGonzalo de Córdobadefeated the French underLouis d'Armagnac(6thDuke of Nemours) below the town, a victory which ensured Spain the rule over thekingdom of Naples[4](seebattle of Cerignola) and is considered the first battle whose outcome was determined by gunpowder.[5]
In 17th century the fief passed to the Pignatelli family. Cerignola was rebuilt after a great earthquake in 1731.[4]In the 19th century, after thereclamationof its territory, it has been home to a considerable agricultural production.

Cuisine
[edit]TheItalian wine DOCof Rosso di Cerignola is designated for red wine production only. Grapes are limited to aharvestyield of 14 tonnes/ha with the finished wine required to have at least 12% alcohol. The wine is a blend of at least 55%Uva di Troia,15-30%Negroamaro,and up to 15% of an assortment ofSangiovese,Barbera,Montepulciano,MalbecandTrebbiano.If the wine is labeled asRiservathen the wine must have been aged at least two years inoak barrels/wood with a minimum alcohol level of 13%.[6]
Transportation
[edit]Cerignola has a station,Cerignola Campagna,on thePescara-Barimain railroad (Adriatic railway), served by regional trains. From 1891 to 1956, it was the terminus of a short line to the city centre (Cerignola Cittàstation).[7]
It has also an exit ( "Cerignola Est" ) on theA14 motorwayBologna-Taranto,and one ( "Cerignola Ovest" ) on theA16 motorwayNaples-Canosa.Provincial roads connect it to the main centre in the region as well.
Public bus service in the town is provided by STUC company.
