Cerinzais a town and municipality in theColombianDepartmentofBoyacá,and part of theTundama Provincesubregion. Cerinza bordersBelénin the north,Encino,Santanderin the west,Santa Rosa de Viterboin the south andFlorestaandBetéitivain the east.[2]

History

Before theSpanish conquest of the Muiscaof theAltiplano Cundiboyacense,the area of Cerinza was ruled by thecaciqueofTundama,present-day Duitama. Thecacicazgowas part of theMuisca Confederation,the former country in the central highlands of the ColombianAndes.TheMuiscaspokeChibchaand in that language Cerinza means "my throat". The village was named after thecaciquewith the same name.[3]

Modern Cerinza was founded on 7 January 1554 by Melchor Vanegas, afterconquistadorGonzalo Jiménez de Quesadaentered the village in 1538.
