Charles Hurt(born 1971)[1]is an American journalist and political commentator. He is currently the opinion editor ofThe Washington Times,[2][3][4]Fox Newscontributor,[5]Breitbart Newscontributor, and aDrudge Reporteditor.[2]Hurt's views have been considered to beRepublican-leaning.
Early career
[edit]Hurt began his newspaper career as a boy in Chatham, Virginia, writing and publishing the "Gilmer Gazette," named for the street on which he lived. During college atHampden-Sydney Collegein Virginia he did stints at theDanville Register & Bee,theRichmond Times-Dispatchand theSt. Louis Post-Dispatch.His first full-time job after graduating in 1995 was atThe Detroit Newswhere he became a replacement worker during a bitter strike. He worked at the paper until 2001, when he moved to theWashington, D.C.area to join the staff ofThe Charlotte Observer.[6]
Hurt wasThe New York Post's D.C. Bureau Chief and news columnist covering theWhite Housefor five years.
From 2003 to 2007, Hurt covered the U.S. Congress as a reporter forThe Washington Times[6]before leaving to joinThe New York Post.In 2011, he rejoinedThe Washington Timesas a political columnist.[3]In December 2016, Hurt was named the opinion editor.[4]
National RevieweditorRich Lowrydescribed Hurt as, "an early adopter of Donald Trump populism."[7]Hurt has written numerous opinion pieces lauding Trump since the 2016 election.[8]
Personal life
[edit]Hurt was born inChatham, Virginia.[9]Hurt is the son of investigative journalist and formerReader's Digesteditor Henry C. Hurt and his wife, Margaret Nolting Williams.[10][11]His older brother,Robert Hurt,is a former United States Congressman. Charles Hurt had been a possible congressional candidate before his brother's term ended in 2016. Hurt and his wife, Stephanie, have three children.[12][13]
