Charlotte Frances Riley(born 29 December 1981) is an English actress. She is known for her roles as Sarah Hurst inEasy Virtue(2008) and asCatherine EarnshawinITV's adaptation ofWuthering Heights(2009).[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Riley was born inGrindon,County Durham.[2]She was brought up in County Durham and attendedTeesside High Schoolfrom the age of 9 until 18.[3]She attendedSt Cuthbert's Society, Durhamfrom 2000 to 2003, performing with the sketch comedy group, the Durham Revue[4]and in plays and musicals and graduating with a degree in English and Linguistics; she also attended theLondon Academy of Music and Dramatic Artfrom 2005 to 2007.[5]

Career[edit]

In 2004, Riley won theSunday Times' Playwriting Award forShaking Cecilia,which she co-wrote with Tiffany Wood.[6][7]In 2011, she played Anna inHelen Edmundson's adaptation ofAnna of the Five TownsonBBC Radio 4.[8]She appeared inEdge of Tomorrow,starringTom CruiseandEmily Blunt.She also appeared onstage at theRoyal Court Theatreproduction ofThe Priory,byMichael Wynne.[9]She co-starred inLondon Has Fallen,the sequel to the 2013 filmOlympus Has Fallen,[10]where she portrayed anMI6agent Jacqueline Marshall.[11]She also portrayed Arabella Strange in the mini-series adaptation ofJonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.[12]In 2018, she got a lead role in theBBCdramaPress,[13]which was cancelled after its first series. In 2019, Riley played the role of Lottie / Ghost of Christmas Present in the BBC mini-seriesA Christmas Carol,based on theCharles Dickensnovella of the same name.[14]She appeared in theAmazon Prime VideoseriesThe Peripheral.[15]

Personal life[edit]

In 2008, Riley andTom Hardymet while playing fictional lovers, Cathy and Heathcliff on the set ofWuthering Heights.In an interview Hardy mentioned that although they became good friends while filming Wuthering Heights and The Take, they only got together later after filming the movie Warrior in 2009. And around the summer of 2010, Hardy proposed to Riley. On July 4, 2014, the couple married in an intimate ceremony at Chateau de Roussan, attended by family and friends including Hardy's son, Louis Thomas, from his previous relationship with Rachael Speed. Riley and Hardy expanded their blended family first with a son in October 2015 and then another son in December 2018.[16]
