Ḷ(minuscule:ḷ) is a letter of theLatin Alpha bet,derived fromLwith a diacriticaldot below.It is or was used in some languages to represent various sounds.
- InAsturian,adigraph(Ḷḷ,lower case:ḷḷ) is used to represent some western dialectal phonemes corresponding to standardll(representing apalatal lateral approximant[ʎ]).[1][2]Among this group of dialectal pronunciations, usually calledche vaqueira,can manifest as: avoiced retroflex plosive[ɖ],avoiced retroflex affricate[ɖʐ],avoiceless retroflex affricate[ʈʂ]or avoiceless alveolar affricate[t͡s].[3]Formerly, this group of sounds were represented aslh(inFernán Coronas's proposed writing system),tsorŝ.However, thisgraphemeis used only in dialectal texts and intoponymsof westernAsturias.[4]Because of the difficulties of writing it in digital texts, non-diacriticall.l(majuscule:L.l) is also often used.[5]
In theInternational Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration,ḷis used to representvocalic/l/.
It is used to represent aretroflex lateral approximant/ɭ/ in several modern language of South Asia when usingISO 15919or similar transliteration schemes.
It is used to represent avoiced palatal lateral approximant[ʎ] inIñupiaq.
