Chen Yannian(1898 – 4 July 1927) was a Chinese revolutionary and early leader of theCommunist Party.

Biography

Chen was born inAnqing Prefecture,Anhui,in 1898, toChen Duxiu,a revolutionary socialist, educator, philosopher and author, who co-founded the Communist Party withLi Dazhaoin 1921.[1]His siblings were, in order of birth:Chen Qiaonian,Chen Songnianand Chen Yuying.[1]He attended the Anqing Shangzhi School (An Khánh thượng chí tiểu học) and Quanwan Middle School (Toàn hoàn trung học). In 1915, he went to study in Shanghai with his younger brother Chen Qiaonian.[1]Soon after, the two brothers were accepted toAurora University.[1]

In December 1919, under the influence of theMay Fourth Movement,the two brothers went toFranceto study under a work-study programme.[1]In June 1922, he co-founded the Chinese Youth Communist Party withZhao ShiyanandZhou Enlaiand served as the propaganda director.[2]In 1922, he joined theFrench Communist Party.In the winter of 1922, with the approval of theCPC Central Committee,the two brother joined the Communist Party.[1]

In September 1924, Chen returned toShanghai.[2]In October, he came toGuangzhouas a special commissioner of theCentral Committee of the Communist Party of Chinaand served as secretary of Guangdong Provincial Committee of theCommunist Youth League of Chinaand director of the Organization Department.[2]In February 1925, he succeeded Zhou Enlai as secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee.[2]In June, Chen,Deng Zhongxia,Su Zhaozhengled theCanton–Hong Kong strike.[2]

In April 1927, when Chen went toWuhanto attend the5th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,the Central Committee appointed him to take over the post of secretary of the CPC Jiangsu and Zhe gian g Provincial Committee and was elected an alternate member of the Political Bureau of the5th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.[2]On his way to Shanghai, theShanghai massacrebroke out.[2]In June 1927, the Central Committee abolished the Jiangsu and Zhe gian g Provincial Committee and established Jiangsu Provincial Committee and Zhe gian g Provincial Committee respectively.[2]Chen was appointed secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee.[2]On June 26, he was arrested by the Kuomintang police, and later tortured during questioning.[2]On the evening of 4 July 1927, he was pinned down and hacked to death by the Kuomintang police after refusing to kneel for his execution.[2]

In 2009, he was selected as "100 Heroes and Models who made Outstanding Contributions to the Founding of New China" by thePropaganda Departmentand theOrganization Department.[3]

There is a road named "Yanqiao Road" (Duyên kiều lộ) after him and his younger brother Chen Qiaonian inHefei,Anhui.
