Chitrambari(pronouncedchitrāmbari) is aragaminCarnatic music(musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is the 66thMelakartarāgam in the 72melakartarāgam system of Carnatic music. It is calledChaturangini[1][2]inMuthuswami Dikshitarschool of Carnatic music. It is theprati madhyamamequivalent ofNaganandini,which is the 30thmelakarta.[3]

Structure and Lakshana[edit]

It is the 6th rāgam in the 11thchakra Rudra.The mnemonic name for this rāgam isRudra-Sha.The mnemonic phrase issa ra gu mi pa dhu nu.[3]Itsārohaṇa-avarohaṇastructure (ascending and descending scale) is (seeswaras in Carnatic musicfor details on below notation and terms):

Since it is amelakartarāgam, by definition it is asampoornarāgam(it has all 7 notes in ascending and descending scale).

Chitrambari'snotes when shifted usingGraha bhedam,yields 3 othermelakartarāgams, namely,Shanmukhapriya,ShooliniandDhenuka.Graha bhedamis the step taken in keeping the relative note frequencies same, while shifting theshadjam(Sa) to the next note in the rāgam.
