Chiusaforte(Slovene:Kluže;German:Klausen;Friulian:Sclûse) is acomune(municipality) in theRegional decentralization entity of Udinein theItalianregion ofFriuli-Venezia Giulia.

It is located about 90 kilometres (56 mi) northwest ofTriesteand about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north ofUdine,on the border withSlovenia.Chiusaforte is situated in the Canal del Ferro valley of the Fella River, running between theCarnicandJulian Alpsto its confluence with theTagliamento.

Chiusaforte borders the following municipalities:Dogna,Malborghetto Valbruna,Moggio Udinese,Bovec(Slovenia),Resia,Resiutta,Tarvisio.

The Fella Valley is the site of Pontebbana railway line fromUdinetoTarvisioand theAustrianborder. It is also traversed by the parallel ItalianAutostrada A23highway fromPalmanovato Tarvisio.

The narrow valley probably had been the site of aRoman RoadfromItalyto theNoricumprovince. Ulric von Eppenstein,Patriarch of Aquileia(1086–1121) had a fortress erected to chargetollsto travellers crossing theAlps.The Patriarchs had to defend their territory against the claims raised by theCounts of Görzand theDukes of Carinthia,until in 1420 theRepublic of Veniceconquered the Fella Valley up toPontebbaand incorporated it into theDomini di Terraferma.

Annexed by theHabsburg monarchyaccording to the 1797Treaty of Campo Formioit was part of the AustrianKingdom of Lombardy–Venetiafrom 1815, until it fell with Venetia to the newly establishedKingdom of Italyaccording to the 1866Treaty of Vienna.
