Clan Gedis aScottish clan.[1]The clan does not currently have achiefrecognised by theLord Lyon King of Armsand is considered anarmigerous clan.Without a recognised chief the clan has no standing underScots Law.In Scotland, thesurnameGedandGeddesmay be derived from the place-nameGeddesinNairn.[2]Another possibility is that it is derived from theOld Englishgedda,anicknamemeaningpike.[2]

Thecoats of armsofGedandGeddescontain three pike, referring to their surnames. The English word for pike isluce,and severalNormanfamilies namedde Lucyhave pike on their coats of arms. One unsupported possibility is that one such family moved to Scotland and adopted the surnamesGedorGeddes.An early record of the clan name is found in theprivy council,which records the respite granted to James Tweedie after the murder of William Geddes in 1558.[1]

The crest badge contains thecresta pike's head Properand themottoDURAT DITAT PLACET(fromLatin:"it sustains, it enriches, it pleases" ). The crest of a pike is apunon the clan name. The use of pike on the arms is an example ofcanting arms,as agedis theheraldicterm for a pike.[3]
