Clarence Self Ridley(June 22, 1883 – July 26, 1969) served as the governor of thePanama Canal Zonefrom 1936 to 1940.[1][2]
Biography
[edit]Ridley was born inCorydon, Indianaon June 22, 1883, to Judge William Ridley.[3]
Ridley graduated fourth in a class of 114 from theUnited States Military Academy at West Pointin 1905.[3]He was commissioned second lieutenant in theU.S. Army Corps of Engineers.In 1917, Ridley was appointed senior military aide to President Wilson. He supervised construction of theLincoln Memorial.[1]AfterWorld War I,Ridley graduated from theCommand and General Staff Schoolin 1925, theArmy War Collegein 1931 and theArmy Industrial Collegein 1932.[4]He then served as an instructor at the Army Industrial College.[5]
Ridley served as Governor of the Panama Canal Zone from 1936 to 1940.[1]He was promoted tobrigadier generaleffective October 1, 1938 and received a temporary promotion tomajor generalon February 14, 1941.[4]DuringWorld War II,he was commanding general of the6th Infantry Divisionfrom January 1941 to August 1942.[6][7]Ridley then served as chief of the U.S. Military Mission toIranfrom 1942 to 1946, for which he was awarded theArmy Distinguished Service Medal,[5][8]the citation for which reads:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Clarence Self Ridley (ASN: 0-2024), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during the period from November 1942 to October 1945. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Ridley reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.[9]
His promotion to major general was made permanent on February 27, 1947, and he retired from active duty on June 30, 1947, after forty-two years of service.[10]
Ridley died on July 26, 1969, inCarmel, California.[1]He was buried at theWest Point Cemeteryon October 21, 1969.[11]
