Cleve Barry Moler(born August 17, 1939) is an Americanmathematicianandcomputer programmerspecializing innumerical analysis. In the mid to late 1970s, he was one of the authors ofLINPACKandEISPACK,Fortranlibraries for numerical computing. He createdMATLAB,a numerical computing package, to give his students at theUniversity of New Mexicoeasy access to these libraries without writing Fortran. In 1984, he co-foundedMathWorkswithJack Littleto commercialize this program.[1]

Biography

[edit]

He received hisbachelor's degreefromCalifornia Institute of Technologyin 1961, and aPh.D.in 1965 fromStanford University, both in mathematics.[2]He worked for Charles Lawson at theJet Propulsion Laboratoryin 1961 and 1962.

He was a professor of mathematics and computer science for almost 20 years at theUniversity of Michigan,Stanford University, and theUniversity of New Mexico.[3]Before joiningMathWorksfull-time in 1989, he also worked forIntelHypercube, where he coined the term "embarrassingly parallel",andArdent Computer Corporation. He is also co-author of four textbooks on numerical methods and is a member of theAssociation for Computing Machinery. He was president of theSociety for Industrial and Applied Mathematics2007–2008.[4]

He was elected a member of theNational Academy of Engineeringon February 14, 1997, for conceiving and developing widely used mathematical software. He received an honorary degree fromLinköping University,Sweden. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Mathematics from theUniversity of Waterlooin 2001.[5]On April 30, 2004, he was appointed Honorary Doctor (doctor technices, honoris causa) at theTechnical University of Denmark. In 2009, he was recognized by Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics as a SIAM Fellow[6]for his outstanding contributions to numerical analysis and software, including the invention of MATLAB. In April 2012, theIEEE Computer Societynamed Cleve the recipient of the 2012 Computer Pioneer Award.[7]In February 2014, IEEE named Cleve the recipient of the 2014IEEE John von Neumann Medal.[8]In April 2017, he was made Fellow of theComputer History Museum.[9][10]
