Anatomical terminology

Thepectineal ligament, sometimes known as theinguinal ligament of Cooper,is an extension of thelacunar ligament. It runs on thepectineal lineof thepubic bone. The pectineal ligament is the posterior border of thefemoral ring.

Structure[edit]

The pectineal ligament connects to thelacunar ligament, and therefore to theinguinal ligament.[1]It connects to thepectineus muscleon its ventral and superior aspects.[1]It connects to therectus abdominis muscle, and theabdominal internal oblique muscle,of theanterior abdominal wall.[1]

The pectineal ligament is usually around 6cmlong inadults.[2]It is close to the major vasculature of thepelvis, includingexternal iliac vein.[2]

Clinical significance[edit]

The pectineal ligament is strong, and holds suture well.[citation needed]This facilitates reconstruction of the floor of theinguinal canal.[citation needed]It is a useful landmark forpelvicsurgery.[1]A variant ofnon-prostheticinguinal herniarepair, first used byGeorg LotheisseninAustria, now bears his name.[citation needed]

History[edit]

The pectineal ligament was characterized byAstley Cooperin 1804.[3][4]
