TheCouncil of Portugal,officially, theRoyal and Supreme Council of Portugal(Portuguese:Real e Supremo Conselho de Portugal;Spanish:Real y Supremo Consejo de Portugal), was the ruling body and a key part of the government of theKingdom of Portugalduring theIberian Union.The council was founded in 1582 byPhilip I of Portugalfollowing the model of theCouncil of Castile.[1]It provided Portugal with a large degree of autonomy from theHouse of Habsburg.[2]

Apart from administering theKingdom of Portugaland the Algarves,the council administeredPortugal's colonial empire.

The council ceased to exist after the conclusion of thePortuguese Restoration Warin 1668.
