TheBorough of Blackpoolis alocal government districtwithborough statusin theceremonial countyofLancashire,North West England.Its councilis aunitary authority,being a district council which also performs the functions of acounty council.It is named after the seaside town ofBlackpoolbut covers a wider area which includesAnchorsholme,Bispham,Layton,MartonandSquires Gate.As well as the suburbs ofGrange Park,North Shore,South ShoreandStarr Gate.The borough also forms the core of the widerBlackpool conurbation.

The borough is bordered to the north and north-east by theBorough of Wyre(includingFleetwood,Cleveleys,ThorntonandPoulton-le-Fylde), and to the south and south-east byBorough of Fylde(includingLytham St Annes), both of which arenon-metropolitan districtsin Lancashire. The western boundary is theIrish Seacoast. Surrounding districts form part of theBlackpool Urban Areawhich covers all the unitary authority area.[5][6][7][8][9]

History

Blackpool was amunicipal boroughuntil 1889 when it became acounty borough,[10]on 1 April 1974, under theLocal Government Act 1972,the county borough of Blackpool was reconstituted as anon-metropolitan districtwith the same boundaries as the county borough.[11][12]Until 1998, Blackpool was administered as part ofLancashire County Councilwhich was based inPreston.After the creation ofunitary authoritiesby the government, Blackpool andBlackburnwere successful in gaining their own right to govern independent from the county council. Blackpool gained unitary authority status,[13]as did Blackburn and it was renamed "Blackburn with Darwen". As of 2021these are the only two unitary authorities in Lancashire although they remain part of Lancashire for ceremonial purposes.
