Daryl McCormack(born 22 January 1993) is an Irish actor. Trained at theGaiety School of Acting,he made his acting debut in the soap operaFair City(2015–2016). He appeared in the BBC seriesPeaky Blinders(2019–2022), the filmPixie(2020), and theApple TV+seriesBad Sisters(2022). His portrayal of the title role in the sex comedy-dramaGood Luck to You, Leo Grande(2022) earned him a nomination for theBAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.In 2023, he won theTrophée Chopardfrom theCannes Film Festival.
Early life and education[edit]
McCormack was born on 22 January 1993.[1]He is the son of an Irish mother, Theresa McCormack, and an African-American father, Alfred Thomas, fromBaltimore.[2]His parents met inCaliforniain 1992. His mother returned to Ireland upon getting pregnant, and raised McCormack inNenagh,County Tipperary.He maintains a good relationship with the paternal side of his family, especially his grandfather Percy Thomas, who would visit McCormack and take him to the theatre.[3]
McCormack attended Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan and St. Joseph'sCBS.He played basketball and participated in the Choral Society.[4][5]He went on to study at theDublin Institute of Technology's Conservatory and theGaiety School of Acting,graduating with aBachelor of Artsin drama 2014.[6][7][8][9]
Career[edit]
Upon graduating in 2014, McCormack was cast in his first professional role in the playThe Grapes of Wrathat theProject Arts Centre.[citation needed]The following year, he made his television debut in theRTÉ Onesoap operaFair Cityas Pierce Devlin, a character he would play until 2016.[citation needed]Also in 2015, he ledRomeo and Julietas Romeo at theGate Theatreand starred as the titularOthelloat theTheatre Royal Waterford.[citation needed]
He made hisWest Enddebut in 2018 as Brendan inThe Lieutenant of Inishmore.In his early career, he was almost cast inStar Wars: The Force Awakens.[10][2][11]In 2019, he starred alongsideOlivia CookeandBen HardyinBarnaby Thompson's comedy-thriller filmPixieand joined the cast ofPeaky Blindersfor its fifth series as Isaiah Jesus.[6][7][12]
In 2021 he was named as aScreen Internationalstar of tomorrow.[13]He had a recurring role as Aram in the first season of theAmazon Primefantasy seriesThe Wheel of Timein 2021. In 2022, he starred as Matthew Claffin inSharon Horgan'sApple TV+seriesBad Sistersand oppositeEmma Thompsonas the titular character ofSophie Hyde's filmGood Luck to You, Leo Grande,[14][15][16]the latter of which earned him nominations for twoBritish Academy Film Awardsand aBritish Independent Film Award.
In 2023, he starred inAlice Troughton's thriller filmThe Lessonand the BBC thriller seriesThe Woman in the Wall.[17][18]
McCormack appeared inLee Isaac Chung'sTwisterssequel and has forthcoming roles in the family thrillerAnniversary[19][20]andRian Johnson'sWake Up Dead Man.[21]
