David James Bamber(born 19 September 1954) is an English actor. He has worked in television and theatre. He is an Associate of theRoyal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Early years

Bamber was born inWalkden,Lancashire.By September 1973, he was at theManchester Youth Theatre,playingPandarusinTroilus and Cressida.[1]Bamber studied drama atBristol University,continuing his training atRADAwhere he won the Gold Medal in 1979.

Career

Bamber has worked on many British television series,mini-seriesand TV films. He appeared in theBBCadaptations ofHanif Kureishi'sThe Buddha of SuburbiaandJane Austen'sPride and Prejudice,in which he portrayed the Bennets' clergyman cousin,Mr. Collins.He also played the part of a junior treasury minister and stamp collecting enthusiast, Julian Whitaker, in an episode ofThe New Statesman,in which Alan frames Whitaker and forces his resignation. In 1997 he starred as Eric Slatt in two series ofSteven Moffat'sChalk,contributing to the audio commentaries for the DVD release in 2008. His best known international television role to date was his 2005–2007 role asMarcus Tullius Ciceroin theHBO/BBC2original television series,Rome.InPoirotSeries 3: Episode 7 "The Double Clue," he plays the effete middleman to a jewellery collector who is robbed. Bamber also playedAdolf HitlerinBryan Singer's film,Valkyrie.He played the part of Noel in the Sky Atlantic seriesCamping,andAdmiral Ramsayin the 2017 filmDarkest Hour.

As a stage actor, Bamber won the 1995Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actorfor his performance as Guy inMy Night with Reg,a role he reprised in a 1996BBCtelevision adaptation. His roles as a voice actor includeEmperor Constantinein theDoctor Whoaudio drama,The Council of Nicaeaand as Jeremy Longstaff in the 2008 radio seriesThe Way We Live Right Now.

Personal life

Bamber is married to the actress Julia Swift, daughter of actorsDavid SwiftandPaula Jacobs.

They have two sons, Theo (1991) andEthan(1998). Ethan has played cricket for England U19s andMiddlesex.[2][3]The family lives inNorth London.
