Dirk Maas(12 September 1659 – 25 December 1717), was aDutch Golden Agelandscape painter.

Biography

Maas was born and died inHaarlem.According to Houbraken he was first a pupil ofHendrick Mommers,a Haarlem painter of vegetable market scenes, and then took lessons fromNicolaes Berchem,who he probably met through Mommers.[1]Maas became a follower of Berchem's Italianate landscape painting.[1]Eventually he took up withJan van Huchtenburg,whereupon he devoted himself to painting horses.[1]

According to the RKD he was first became a member of theHaarlem Guild of Saint Lukein 1678, and in 1690 he accompaniedWilliam III of England's army, where he painted theBattle of the Boynefirst-hand.[2]He was a pupil of Mommers, Berchem, and Huchtenburg who made prints, Italianate landscapes, andstaffagefor other painters.[2]In 1697 he became a member of theConfrerie Pictura,though he seems to have remained active in Haarlem also.[2]
